The Language Vending Machine
Episode 4
Nikki 💋 / 日希
The vending machines were doing nothing extraordinary that afternoon.
They hummed beside the pavement, offering cold drinks to people who already knew what they wanted.
Nikki was about to pass them when a young woman stepped into her path.
“Excuse me…”
The woman held a map with both hands. One corner had softened from being folded and unfolded too many times. She pointed to a destination and asked a question in Japanese.
Nikki looked at the map.
She knew the place.
She knew the way.
But she could not find the words to say so.
The woman waited, her hopeful smile growing uncertain.
Nikki opened her mouth, then closed it. For someone who usually trusted herself to figure things out, this small silence felt surprisingly large.
“I just wish I knew one word,” she whispered.
Beside her, a machine flickered.
Nikki turned.
A light blinked once—almost like a wink. The familiar rows of drinks shimmered and changed. Strange little bottles appeared behind the glass, glowing as though each held a fragment of sunrise.
One selection read: Perfect Japanese.
Sold out.
Of course, Nikki thought.
Below it stood a smaller bottle.
One Japanese Word.
She glanced at the woman, then pressed the button.
The bottle fell into the tray with an ordinary little clunk.
Nothing else about it was ordinary.
When Nikki opened it, golden light spiraled upward. It curled around her face, swept toward her lips, and disappeared into her mouth.
She swallowed.
Warmth spread through her, but no grand speech arrived. No sudden mastery. Just a small possibility—and the decision to use it.
Nikki looked at the map again.
Then she smiled.
“Let’s go together.”
The woman’s face brightened.
“Really? Thank you.”
Her voice carried relief and joy.
Nikki gestured down the street, and they began walking side by side.
There were pauses. There were gestures. Once, they both laughed without quite knowing whether they were laughing at the same thing.
It didn’t matter.
At the corner, Nikki glanced back. The machine was selling ordinary drinks again.
She had wished for one word.
What she had offered was her time, her company, and a way forward.
One small phrase had opened the conversation. Kindness had carried it the rest of the way.
